The 4 C's of Diamonds

Carat is the measurement of a diamond's weight. A carat is equal to 100 points. Large diamonds are rare and have a greater value per carat.

Letters of the alphabet represent the Color grading of a diamond. Diamonds come in every color of the spectrum but the most popular color remains white. Colorless diamonds are very rare. Diamonds are graded by color and given designations dependant on how far they deviate from the purest white. Colorless stones are graded D. Color grading continues down through the alphabet with each letter designating a more yellow tint. Common colors grades are E, F, G, H and I. Colorful diamonds, known as fancies, are valued for their depth of color just as white diamonds are valued for their lack of color. Fancies come in many color ranges from red to canary yellow to blue, green and brown.

A diamond's Clarity is affected by any external irregularities and internal imperfections created by nature when the diamond was formed. Imperfections such as spots, bubbles or lines are called inclusions. Inclusions interfere with the passage of light through the stone, diminishing the sparkle and value of the diamond. Clarity is graded on a scale ranging from Flawless (FL or IF) to Imperfect (I). Other Clarity grades that fall in between include the following: VVS Very Very Slightly Included; VS Very Slightly Included and SI Slightly Included. To be graded flawless, a diamond must have no inclusions visible to a trained eye under a 10x magnification in good light, whereas, a diamond graded Imperfect has inclusions visible to the eye.

Each diamond is cut according to an exact mathematical formula. The most common cut, the round brilliant, has 58 facets, or small, flat, polished planes designed to yield the maximum amount of light to be reflected back to the viewer. This reflection, known as brilliance, is an extremely important factor in evaluating the quality of a diamond. A poorly cut diamond will actually loose light and appears dull. The widest circumference of a diamond is known as the girdle. Above the girdle of a brilliant cut diamond are 32 facets plus the table, the largest and the topmost facet. Below the girdle are 24 facets plus the cutlet, or point. Cut is also used to describe the shape of a diamond. In addition to the round brilliant, other popular cuts include emerald, teardrop or pear, oval and princess.

A Diamond is Forever

While fashion and fads make their way in and out of the mainstream, diamond jewelry remains classic. A quality diamond will last a lifetime and is often enjoyed as a treasured heirloom. Classic diamond jewelry is right for any occasion, never going out of style. When it comes to other types of diamond jewelry, such as a Diamond Solitaire Necklaces and Diamond Solitaire Earrings, purchase the diamond that captures the brilliance of the moment. Choosing a quality diamond to celebrate life's most intimate occasions is a truly rewarding experience for the one who gives as well as for the one who receives.

While all diamonds are beautiful, only by comparing diamonds will you be able to appreciate what makes one more rare and valuable than another. When you view diamonds side by side, you'll understand why diamonds that look similar at a casual glance are priced differently. Keep in mind that there are no "bargain" diamonds; there are only diamonds of different value, weight and brilliance.

Custom Design Jewellery

The foundations of our business have always been a close relationship with fine craftsmanship and a strong emphasis on the quality of our finished product. Our design studio is equipped with the most modern and innovative tools and equipment available to the jewellery industry. Our craftsmen are trained to utilise many different methods in the jewellery creation process.

3 Step Ring Design Process

  1. The first step is deciding on a price range. This narrows down the criteria in selecting a diamond, which in most cases determines approximately 90% of the cost of the ring.
  2. Second is finding a loose diamond from among the many Artistry In Gold offers. Buy what you can afford, you can always upgrade later.
  3. Thirdly, is selecting a ring setting, this may at first seem at first to be the most intimidating, but it is actually quite a simple process. There are several options available from our extensive selection of pre-made unset or semi-set ring settings, from our unique selection of our original designs, or you may communicate your ideas to us and with your assistance, we will design your “treasure for tomorrow”.

Remember after the wedding, the celebration with family and friends, the honeymoon etc., the ring is one of the few everyday reminders of your commitment to each other.

Hand Fabrication

One of the greatest assets and credit to our success at Artistry in Gold is our ability to create a piece of fine jewellery completely by hand. This is the area in which our reputation for fine craftsmanship was built, and where we truly shine. Before the advent of computer aided design, modern casting and mass duplication technology, jewellery was created by highly skilled craftsmen utilising ancient techniques. Workers in the jewellery trade were separated by their level of skill and training. Artistry In Gold brings you three generations of commitment to fine craftsmanship.

3D Rendering

Our clients often approach us with little more than a concept for a piece. Our designers at Artistry in Gold can take those conceptual ideas, whether from a sketch or just a verbal description, and turn them into working images through Computer Aided Design. You will then be able to see a visual prototype of a piece and work with us to adjust the design to your specifications. Once you're satisfied with the design, our designers at Artistry in Gold will use Computer Aided Manufacturing to create a physical model, ready for molding or casting.

We are flexible in our approach to the jewellery CAD/CAM process. You can provide us with a CAD file in a variety of different formats and we'll create a model. There are many options available at Artistry in Gold when it comes to CAD/CAM. We're here to help you at any point in the process, from design to production.

Casting

At Artistry in Gold, the ancient practice of lost wax casting is used to create a variety of pieces, from simple to extraordinarily complex designs. We feel it's of paramount importance to match the piece to the most effective method of casting. We employ three different methods of casting.

  1. Gold and silver are cast at relatively low temperatures (1,500° to 2,100°F). A gypsum-bonded investment is used to cast. The melted metals are gravity-poured with a vacuum assist and pressure over pour.
  2. Platinum and palladium are cast at higher temperatures (2,200° to 3,800°F). A phosphate-bonded investment is used to cast. The melted metals are centrifugally poured under a vacuum.
  3. At Artistry in Gold, we also employ a proprietary cuttlebone shell and sand casting method. This unique technique can be used with every type of metal.

Jewellery Repairs

Repairs are undertaken by skilled craftsmen on the premises. Charges begin at $35 plus GST that should cover the cost of a simple re-sizing of a gem-set gold ring.

Laser Welding

Artistry in Gold, Design Studio uses a sophisticated jewellery laser welding process for both assembling and repairing pieces. Offering far more precision than other techniques, our Laser system allows us to weld spots with diameters as small as .2 millimeters. Heat-sensitive metals present no difficulties and our laser welding enables us to work with materials that traditionally cannot be soldered.

In addition, we are able to weld different metals together and create a purer metallurgical bond without compromising the temper of the metal. Laser welding creates stronger joints with no discoloration, no added materials, and no filler. Our equipment is state-of-the-art, greatly enhancing our ability to provide you with the best work the industry can offer

Seal Engraving or Hand Engraving

True hand engraving, once a cornerstone of fine jewellery ornamentation, is all but a lost art today. Skilled artisans-tutored in classic old-world apprenticeship programs labour over each and every ring in effect creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces

Artistry In Gold have a selection of the finest gold and stone-set signet rings and offer a comprehensive engraving service, from helping to trace a family crest through to commissioning an original Coat of Arms. Signet rings are available in 10K, 14Kand 18K gold at competitive prices in a choice of styles chosen to accommodate almost every shape and size of crest.
