7 Surprising Places Where Your Engagement Ring Is Extra-Sparkly

March 13th, 2012 Terry

Diamond engagement rings are meant to sparkle, but some locales seem to be designed for maximum sparkliness. If you feel like your own diamond isn’t so shiny, you should check it out in one of these settings…

(Clean) Public Bathrooms
I know, I wouldn’t have expected it, either. But the combination of bright lights (unless you’re in a dimly lit public bathroom, but I’d advise avoiding those) and mirrors make for twinkling diamonds.

Elevators
Embarrassing, but true: I once wigged out in a crowded office elevator. The overhead light was shining right on my engagement ring, and I decided to look directly into the glare, which, of course, sent a sharp pain shooting through my eye. I instantly threw my hands over my eye to cover it and I think I screamed something like, “Aye!” (not to be confused with eye). So ladies, as tempting as it is, do not stare directly into your engagement rings (or other gals’) in elevators.

Airports
I thought my diamond was more sparkly than it actually is because I spent the better part of the first hours of my engagement waiting to board a flight back home from Paris. I blame the super-sized bright white lights.

Bowling Alleys
I just discovered this the other day (as a member of my company’s esteemed bowling team): Some dark alleys have intense pinspot lighting from above. Instant sparkle.

Subway Cars
I don’t have a flashy engagement ring (definitely not compared to the other ladies riding the New York City subways during rush hour), yet I occasionally catch my fellow commuters checking out my bit of bling. It’s not the size of my diamond (just below average, as you may recall) or the eye-catching design, so what’s capturing their attention? I bet I’m unwittingly blinding them if I adjust my ring (and I often do) and it catches the light in the wrong way. One caveat with this location: The subway car has to be pretty new (or sparkling clean, itself). Nothing’s shiny on a dirty old subway car.

Boardrooms
When you’re on the lower end of the totem pole at your job, here’s an instant pick-me-up: Check out how gorgeous your engagement ring is under the lights in the conference room. (But do it subtly–you don’t want your colleagues to think you care more about your jewelry than the meeting subject.)

Big-Box Warehouse and Home Improvement Stores
Paul and I are in the middle of renovating our kitchen (want to test the strength of your marriage? try installing tiles in a 60-square-foot space), so we made many runs to those giant home improvement stores. Even though I looked less-than-glamorous hauling plywood and grout buckets, that engagement ring of mine was shining under the massive ultra-white lights many yards above my head.

Rare Pink Diamond Found In Australia

February 29th, 2012 Terry

It’s taken 26 years of production to unearth this rare pink diamond.

Pink diamonds are one of the most valuable jewels in the world – and now Rio Tinto miners in Australia have unearthed the biggest ever found in the country.

The company’s Argyle mine, situated in the Kimberly region, produces a staggering 90 per cent of the world’s pink diamonds and is describing this example as ‘unprecedented’.

It has named the 12.76-carat jewel the Argyle Pink Jubilee and the bookies believe it may fetch between $50 million at auction.

A diamond of this calibre is unprecedented – it has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone, and we may never see one like this again,’ said Argyle Pink Diamonds Manager Josephine Johnson in a statement.

Pink diamonds were made famous throughout the world thanks to the popular Pink Panther films starring Peter Sellers.

The Blue Hope

The 45.52 carat steel blue Hope Diamond was found in India back in remote times as a rough crystal weighing 112 carats. It first came to light when Jean Baptiste Tavernier, the noted French traveler of the 17th century, was approached in India by a slave who had a very secretive manner about him.

It is blue to the naked eye because of trace amounts of boron within its crystal structure, but exhibits red phosphorescence after exposure to ultraviolet light.

#4 – The Great Star of Africa

Also known as Cullinan, The Great Star of Africa is the largest cut diamond in the world. This breathtaking diamond was found by Thomas Evan a miner who brought it to the surface and gave it to Frederick Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company in Cullinan, on January 26, 1905. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine.

The Cullian was cut by Joseph Asscher and Company of Amsterdam, who examined the enormous crystal for around six months before determining how to divide it. It eventually yeilded nine major, and 96 smaller brilliant cut stones.
