Diamonds to make your laundry Sparkle.

June 28th, 2012 Terry

Scientists at the University of Warwick in England have discovered that putting small diamonds, just 5 nanometers big, in laundry detergent can give you even cleaner laundry. The diamond laundry detergent not only gets the laundry cleaner, but also works in colder water then traditional detergent.

“We found that the five nanometer diamonds changed the way detergents behaved at 25 degrees centigrade (77 degrees Fahrenheit), doubling the amount of fat removed,” Andrew Marsh, a chemist at the University of Warwick in England, said. “Even at temperatures as low as 15 degrees centigrade (59 degrees F), otherwise hard-to-remove fat could be solubilized from a test surface.”

So next time you go to buy laundry detergent take a quick look at the ingredients for diamonds or crystalized carbon and you may just be getting your whites sparkling white.

Pearls for June

June 14th, 2012 Terry

The modern birthstone of June, Pearls, are often considered symbols of purity and innocence.  With brides wearing them to ensure a happy marriage, being the “teardrops” of the moon and with the myth of the Love Goddess Venus creating pearls from the drops of water that fell off her when she was born out of the sea,  it’s easy to see why pearls are one of the most romantic gemstones.

Pearls are found throughout the Persian Gulf, India, Australia, Tahiti, Japan, the Americas, British Isles and China and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. With early fans from Queen Elizabeth I to Coco Chanel pearls have become a staple in our wardrobe.

Pearls are delicate and require a bit of extra care. They should be stored properly and cleaned regularly to keep up their luster and shape. They should also be put on after you are ready, to avoid getting perfumes and hairspray on them. With a little extra care your pearls should last a lifetime.
